The Durham Health Department hosted a “Be Active Kids” seminar for teachers of young children. Teachers received hands on training on the habits they can instill in their students to promote healthy eating and physical activity.

According to the health department, only one in five children eats the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. According to the National Cancer Institute, 26 percent of Durham County preschool aged children are overweight.

“Teachers can start teaching at an early age when the kids are young,” said Marie Milliren, Durham County Health Department. “This gets kids excited about eating healthy and turns it into a habit that they eat healthy and moving their bodies.”
