HILLBOROUGH, N.C. -- Durham Technical College opens a new campus, trying to keep up with the times and its efforts to save the environment. The school’s new $8 million building includes energy-efficient amenities.

“We have light sensors in all the classrooms so the lights will come on when there’s movement in the room, and turn off after 15 minutes of no movement,” Dina Logan with Durham Tech said. “We also have light shelves that are on the outside wall and these help diffuse the light coming in, but also allow enough natural so that some of the lights will dim automatically.”

A 10,000 gallon collection and reuse filteration system was also installed. This allows the school to collect rainwater from the roof and use the reclaimed water to flush the toilets.

“With our most recent drought we know how important it is to conserve water and we want to do our part,” Logan said.

Twenty-two classrooms will give students the opportunity to take science and anatomy classes as well as their labs all under one roof. Before the Hillsborough location, Logan said, students were traveling to two different locations for their classes and labs.

A grand opening will be held on May 2nd from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. on campus, just off Old Highway 86. An official ribbon-cutting will start around 4:00 p.m.

Continuing Education classes are being offered for the summer term, but general enrollment will start in the fall. For a list of classes click here
