FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. – A group of Wake County residents are banding together to form a coalition against a proposed annexation by the town of Fuquay-Varina.

The proposed annexation area is slightly more than 1,000 acres. It's located along Sunset Lake Road, Bass Lake Road and James Slaughter Road. It's expected to affect about 500 homes and more than 1,500 people.

"I'm prepared to do whatever's necessary to stop this from going through," said Charlie Abrusciato, of a concerned citizen.

And he's not alone.

Some of the homeowners in the proposed involuntary annexation area that said they're not becoming Fuquay-Varina residents without a fight.

They say the annexation of their communities would just mean higher taxes and a duplication of services.

These homeowners have their own wells and septic tanks and said they are satisfied with the Sheriff's department's service in their area.

"A lot of us just build our homes again, financially we've just digging out we've paid for our septic systems to be installed that's why we moved here," said Robert Padalino.

While the homeowners may be content with the way things are now, town leaders said wells and septic tanks don’t last forever and they’re just planning for the future.

"The county does expect us to take care of those areas in our service area and that's what we're trying to do," said John Byrne, Fuquay-Varina Mayor.

He said people shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet, he urges them to stop by one of the informational sessions the town has scheduled before they decide this annexation is a bad idea.

But as of right now, some homeowners can't image anything changing their minds.
Their hope is that they can change the minds of town leaders.

"There's not too many things that would be devastating in my life, I am an elder and I probably would sell the house,"

Others are considering the same thing.

The citizens' coalition against this annexation will meet at the Sunset Lake Lodge next Monday night at 7:30.

The public hearings are scheduled for May 13, 15 and 18.
