The Cotton Company is partnering with the Graham Johnson Cultural Arts Endowment, a foundation to foster arts in the community, to try to make the season a little cooler for the troops serving overseas.
People can make donations for the purchase and shipping of disposable cold packs at the Cotton Company.
Bob Johnson, one of the organizers of the project, first learned about the cold packs through his medical supply business, MedFaxx, and he thought those in Iraq and Afghanistan could make good use of them.
"They lay down at night, it's hot, and they can't go to sleep. Obviously you can't use ice packs," said Johnson. "You need disposable packs, and some of these packs can literally last for a couple of days.
People can also write a thank you note to send to a member of the military.
While the project will benefit people halfway around the world, it will also help out people in the Wake Forest community. Half of the money raised will be donated to Graham Johnson Cultural Arts Endowment.
Kelley Yun, vendor director for The Cotton Company, says the holidays are the perfect time for people to give.
"This is just a fun way that they can not only buy something for their family, but buy something for somebody who's fighting for their freedom," she said.
The store will accept donations in any increment. A donation of 90 cents will purchase one of the packs. A case of 80 costs $59.
