CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. -- Detectives have arrested the alleged ring leader of a major counterfeit check-making operation in the area.
Fred Lawrence Davis, 37, also known as “Big Boy,” Hope Mills was arrested Thursday.
Investigators say Davis made and distributed counterfeit checks under the business account of the Waffle House. Davis allegedly asked homeless people to pick up and deliver the checks to other accomplices of the crime.
Davis is a registered sex offender who was convicted in 1990 of first degree rape in Kings County, New York. He served six years in prison for the crime.
Investigators say Davis has failed to register his status in Cumberland and Durham counties, where he claims to have residences.
Davis is also a fugitive from the state of Arizona where he is wanted in Phoenix for trafficking and possession of marijuana. He will be extradited in the future to face a judge on those charges.
Davis is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center.
