Chatham Co. Senior Targeted In Banking Scam

CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. – Another banking scam incident has been reported in Chatham County.

The Chatham County Council on Aging reports that a senior citizen received a phone call from a scammer claiming to be a Wachovia Bank representative.
 
The caller asked the senior to stay on the line while being connected to an account specialist. The “specialist” then asked for the senior’s checking account number and other personal information.
 
The senior provided the information because she is a Wachovia customer and believed the request was legitimate.
 
Fortunately, the Chatham resident put a hold on her checking account and opened a new one without losing money.
 
“I urge everyone in the county to be on the alert for these scams and to please make the effort to educate family members, friends or neighbors who are particularly vulnerable to these scams,” said Angel Dennison, director of the Council on Aging in a press release.
 
Dennison said scams banking scams are becoming more frequent as the economy continues to decline.
 
To report a suspected scam attempt, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 542-2811, the Police Department (if you live in town limits) or contact the Council on Aging at 542-4512.
