WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. -- A man was arrested Monday and charged with kidnapping and rape after an investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's officials said Elmer Berkley Jr., 56, of Dudley has been charged with first degree kidnapping and first degree forcible rape.                            

Police said the Sheriff's Office received a report of kidnapping on June 20. The victim reported that Berkley kidnapped her and repeatedly raped her. The victim managed to escape from her attacker and called law enforcement. 

Berkley's  bond is set at $200,000.
