With Tuesday's opening of the General Assembly, the Richmond County Democrat is bringing her newborn son to the Legislative Building every day. Goodwin is now juggling the duties of caring for 2-week-old Jackson and serving of her constituents.

Goodwin said Wednesday she hopes women know they can be mothers and public servants at the same time. She said her experience could be seen as an opportunity for women with young children considering serving in the Legislature.

The 37-year-old Goodwin gave birth May 2, becoming the first state lawmaker to have a baby while holding office. House Speaker Joe Hackney agreed to let Goodwin turn unused office space into a makeshift nursery for the remainder of the session.
