Postal Service spokesman Dan Mihalko said a tip came into the Postal Service saying someone had an abundance of mail at their home and it should be checked out.
When authorities checked it out last Tuesday they discovered the mail that dates back as far as five or six years ago. Mihalko said the mail was taken to the Raleigh distribution center where they are still going through the mail to determine what can and can not be delivered at this late date.
Although they are still checking, most of the mail appears to be of no value such as fliers and other first-class mail. No charges have been brought yet against employee, whose name has not been released pending an investigation.
The Postal Service has 700,000 employees nationwide. Mihalko said this is a rare situation.
