Authorities say Timothy Tate is not in custody at this time. The other suspect, Cynthia Glenn, turned herself in on Friday and was released on a $45,000 bond.
Officials said Tate and Glenn stole Kim Jones' credit cards from her purse while she visited her dying niece at Duke Hospital in Durham.
Although Jones feels more comfortable now that the suspects are in custody, it doesn't mean her worries are over.
“I had five cards that were stolen and used,” said Jones. “I also had $125 dollars in cash which wasn't taken. They just took the cards which were much more valuable.”
Surveillance video showed a young man and woman using the cards to charge thousands of dollars worth of stuff. They purchased $30,000 worth of gift cards just at two WalMarts in Brier Creek and Wake Forest. In addition, another $60,000 worth of purchases were made at the Apple Store, Belk, and other stores in Durham, Raleigh, and Knightdale.
Although Jones stopped the credit charges, she's since become buried in paperwork.
“With every transaction I have to go through the paperwork,” she explained. “I have to have a report stating these not my transactions and have them notarized.”
She's got new credit cards now, and new responsibilities.
“I have to follow up to make sure that I have no marks on my credit in the future,” she said.
This was deja vu for Jones, because several years ago she had her identity stolen.
“I thought I learned the first time,” said Jones.
But she discovered, there was another lesson to be learned.
“Just trying to remember what I had was very, very difficult, because I don't really know what I kept in my wallet,” she said. “Let me encourage everyone to take a picture of your wallet if you have to. Know what you carry. Know what's in your wallet.”
Anyone with information on Tate’s whereabouts is asked to call Investigator Holland at 560-4440, ext. 254 or CrimeStoppers at 683-1200.
