Johnston County Commission

Note: Although your partisan ballot on May 6 may contain more names than seen here, it is because the candidate does not have any same-party opposition and will appear on the November ballot without contest.

NBC17 did not change, alter or edit the responses from the surveys. The answers below are as written by each candidate.

District 2: Republicans Ted Godwin and W. Ray Woodall will face each other in the May primary.

Ted G. Godwin
Age: 58
Current Profession / Occupation:  banker

Why should voters select you on Election Day?
I am Christian. I say that to say that my convictions affect how I treat people, how I think about issues and how I make decisions. I am conservative. I look for ways to get things done for a cheaper price, whenever possible. I have 36 years experience in business and dealing with people. I have an ability to get things done without alienating people. I believe I bring a strong, new voice to the County Commissioners Board and I believe I can better articulate a particular direction and/or idea than has been done in the past.

Counties in North Carolina now have the option to seek two new revenue options: a land transfer tax and a sales tax. Should one or both of these new revenue options be used in your county?
None Of Them Should Be Used

Please explain why you believe your answer to the previous question is the right decision for your constituents.
As a growing county, we have a lot of needs. But I think that a more conservative approach to many of the things we're spending on now needs to be thoroughly reviewed before any new taxes are placed on our citizens.

This area of North Carolina continues to grow. What is the best way to handle growth in your county and how can we balance that with maintaining a high quality of life?
Our Blue Ribbon Commission has produced a number of ideas to be considered in dealing with growth. Few of those have been implemented and open discussion has been limited. In looking at specific issues that arise, I believe it important for each member of the board to carefully and methodically educate himself on all aspects of the issue, long-term effects, pros, cons and make an informed decision. I don't have the answers now and any answer will likely have negative side effects. But we must do what's in the best interest of most of the citizens.

District 4: Democrats Donald Byrd and Glenn McLamb will face each other in the May primary. Neither responded to the NBC17 survey.
