RALEIGH, N.C. – Two motor fleet managment employees were arrested Wednesday for using a state credit card to buy gas for their personal cars.
James Joseph Roach Jr., 29, of Raleigh, and David James Smith, 31, of Raleigh, have each been charged with obtaining property by false pretenses in the amount of $733.46. Each currently is being held in Wake County Jail under $3,000 secured bond.
State Capitol Police officials said the men work for the Division of Motor Fleet Management.
The men were arrested after using a state credit card to pay for gas that was pumped into their personal vehicles and others operated by acquaintances at multiple gas stations. Such credit cards are authorized only for payment of fuel used by state-owned or approved vehicles when users do not have access to a state-operated fuel depot.
The employees have been placed on investigatory leave. The matter remains under investigation.
State Capitol Police and Motor Fleet Management are Divisions of the N.C. Department of Administration.
