DURHAM, N.C.—Families and students celebrated Good Friday at Duke University today.

“The service recalls the 14 stages that traditionally Jesus stopped us on His way to the cross,” said Duke Chapel Dean Dr. Samuel Wells.  “And it recalls some of the most significant events about the sad road that Jesus took to the cross for our salvation.

The stations of the cross, which is a traditional Good Friday event, has been celebrated at the Duke Chapel for decades.  The group of students and families present at Friday’s event traveled to each of the 14 stations to celebrate and remember the life of Jesus.  A service inside the chapel immediately followed, where they remembered His death on the cross.

“No crown without a cross, as Christians often say.  We can celebrate the joy of Easter, of new life.  But, what Good Friday says is this is how much it cost God.  And Good Friday is the day when we realize how much God loves us,” Wells said.

Good Friday celebrations will continue throughout Friday evening at the Duke Chapel.  Friday is one of the final days of Holy Week, which began last week on Palm Sunday, and ends on Easter.
