Digging irrigation wells is an option, but some say installing cisterns, which are a lot like giant rain barrels, is the better way to go.
Better, because just one inch of rain falling on a 1,000 square foot home can produce 625 gallons of water.
That's why a number of homeowners are installing rainwater collections systems in their homes
They come in sizes ranging from 550 gallons all the way up to 7,500 gallons, with prices starting around $1,500 on up into the tens of thousands of dollars.
These systems also come with pumps, which provide enough water pressure so you can attach a sprinkler and irrigate your lawn.
"Let's save the high quality water -- the city water, the well water -- let's use that for consumption... and use the rainwater for non-potable needs -- irrigation, washing cars," said Mike Ruck of Rainwater Solutions, a Raleigh-based company that focuses on rainwater harvesting.
"We're just gonna see a continued shortage of water over the next 5 or 10 years as people continue to move in," said Stan Williams, CEO of Stanton Homes, a builder that uses Charlotte-based Brae Water Systems for its rainwater harvesting needs.
