The Fayetteville Police Department said Wednesday that 36-year-old Otis C. Anderson flagged down an officer and informed him that he had overdosed on crack cocaine. When the officer tried to help Anderson, he fled.

Officers responding to an early morning business alarm at 55555 Murchison Road came in contact with Anderson again.

Authorities said Anderson became combative and that officers use a Taser, but did not strike him with both darts. The officer then proceeded to use direct contact mode of the Taser, meaning the officer placed the Taser directly on Anderson.

Fire medics came to attend him, but he stopped breathing and was later pronounced dead.

Police did not directly link the Taser to the man's death. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident and the Fayetteville Police Department is conducting an internal probe.

One officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
