RALEIGH, N.C.-- Webster's dictionary defines a resolution as “something determined upon.” So as the early morning sun warmed the chilly air of this New Year's Day, there was but one resolution amongst the hundreds gathered at N.C. State's centennial campus.
"Start the New Year off right," said Mike Walsh, of the NC Roadrunners Club. "I want to finish the race."
The Resolution Run is sponsored by the NC Roadrunners Club. Besides an entry free, there's only one thing required, runners make a resolution to finish the race.
"I've got Johnny Cash on my Ipod and he's gonna help me finish," said Keith Gifford, who wants to start 2008 getting more active. "If I can finish under 30 minutes, that would be nice."
The 5K run equals about 3.1 miles. The course carries runners up and down the hills in the University's Centennial Campus. While more than half of the people who make New Year's resolutions don't keep them, the idea of the this run is to help people keep at least one resolution.
Fifteen minutes and 55 seconds after the race started, Sandy Roberts of Raleigh crossed the finish line.
The sophomore track runner at Georgetown University told NBC-17 his resolution was simple.
"I wanted to finish in a good time and have fun with my brother," said Roberts.
His brother Logan finished second.
