DURHAM, N.C.--Researchers at Duke University are calling for a unified approach to protecting our water supply.

This is North Carolina's second severe drought in five years.

Duke researchers recently released a report urging more state involvement over water policy.

Researchers said the current town by town approach to water restrictions isn't helping and the state needs to coordinate efforts.

“In the past we had plenty of water resources... didn't really matter, there was plenty to go around but as our state’s population is increasing there are greater demands on resources and we got to know where its going to make wise decisions about how to use it,” said Bill Holman of the Duke Nicholas Institute.

Duke scientists said high level discussions on the effort have just begun.

New drought maps from the North Carolina Drought Monitor are scheduled to be released today.
