RALEIGH, N.C. -- You may have seen the "Greg Laurie" bumper stickers around town and wondered what they were advertising. Confusion around the vague message is part of the appeal of the well-calculated ad campaign.
It is a version of a 21st century viral marketing for a Christian evangelist.
"In New Zealand they were trying to figure out, ' Is he a rave DJ? Is he a car dealer? Is he a real estate guy?'," said Steve Noble, the organizer for the local event. "That's the point -- that it gets people to start asking, 'What's going on?'."
Nobel says you're seeing a new take on an old style of mass evangelism outreach. For the last two decades Greg Laurie has worked with Billy Graham.
"It looks a lot different than Billy Graham -- much more cutting edge," said Noble. "But they essentially took these great models Billy Graham has used and improved them to fit this particular model."
Laurie relies on grassroots help from pastors such as First Assembly's Chris Connell to draw crowds as big as 100,000 people.
"It may be a slick approach, but in reality we just want to do it really well," said Connell.
The "Greg Laurie Harvest" will be held at the RCB Center June 22 through the 24th, and admission is free. Organizers have arranged overflow seating outside, so they recommend arriving early.
